Baithak is a series of conversations that have been conducted over the past four years by the great doyen of Hindustani Classical Music and a highly respected individual, the 92-year-old grand musician, Padma Bhushan Sri Arvind Parikh, a disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan.
Sri Arvind Parikh is a huge influencer and inspirer to Hindustani musicians today. He started Baithak where he would invite eminent musicians to come and have a freewheeling conversation with him, lasting for about 1.5 hours. These conversations are recorded and uploaded on YouTube for everyone to enjoy.
I was invited to speak at the 38th Baithak a few weeks ago. The programme was divided into 4 parts, where we spoke about 4 different aspects of my life and music:
Part 1: Early influences and development
Part 2: Formal training under my Guru
Part 3: New ideas for the future and collaborations
Part 4: Comparison between Hindustani and Carnatic Classical Music
We attempted to cover all of these in one session resulting in the session going on for 2.5 hours.
When you watch the video below, you’ll get an idea of my journey as a musician, the training, the emotional mindset, the spiritual inputs, the vocal training, etc.
This was the first time I had spoken about these things exhaustively. This is also what made me think of sharing with everyone little nuggets of experiences which have gone into my formation as a musician. These will be in small sessions in the coming weeks and months…
I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation.
